Care Tips When Laundering Your Dancewear

by Genesis Fuller

Whether you opt to take up dancing for fitness or if you are enrolling your children in dance classes, one of the most important aspects to consider would be dancewear. To be comfortable when dancing, you need the right attire that will enable you to execute the various moves without inhibition. However, the absorbent nature of dancewear causes them to get dirty and smelly quite quickly. Therefore, you may need to launder your outfits regularly in order to keep them in pristine condition. Consistent washing can make your dancewear look old prematurely, especially if you are not carrying out the proper maintenance measures. Here are some care tips you could use when laundering your dancewear.

Use oxygen based bleach for leotards

Leotards are one of the clothing items built for high performance. As such, they are typically manufactured from synthetic fibres that can withstand a lot of stretching and movement. However, if they are not laundered correctly, they can easily lose their form, meaning you would have to keep replacing them. Additionally, they are highly absorbent and soak up sweat and odours in an instant! The good news is that you can eliminate these through soaking the leotard in a solution of water and an oxygen-based bleach. There are two reasons for this: first, this type of bleach is colour-safe when compared to conventional chlorine bleach. Since leotards tend to have an array of colours, you can be assured your dancewear will not bleed out. Secondly, oxygen-based bleach does not affect your fabric's fibres as compared to chlorine, which can make them age faster than they should.

Launder tutus in the bathtub

It may be tempting to include tutus in your washing machine when doing your regular laundry. However, this makes them at risk of becoming crushed and compromising their structure. Rather than risk this, it is better to wash tutus on their own in the bathtub. The bathtub allows for more space so you do not have to crumple up the tutus. All you have to do is swish them around in a solution of warm water and regular detergent. Rinse them out by running them under clean water then shake them to eliminate any excess water. This careful handling will ensure your tutus maintain their shape for a long time to come.

Take decorative dancewear to the drycleaners

Decorative dancewear will typically have an array of accessories attached to them ranging from feathers to sequins. It may seem cost-effective to simply wash them with your regular dancewear but this increases the chances of the accessories becoming ruined or worse yet, getting stuck in your washing machine's hoses. One option you have would be to religiously remove any accessories prior to laundering, then sewing them back onto the dancewear. However, if you prefer convenience, it is best to simply have them dry cleaned by professionals.
