What You Should Know About Getting Your Workwear Right

by Genesis Fuller

Clothes do indeed make the man, and so much so in today's modern workplace. How you dress will leave an indelible impression on everyone you interact with on your typical workday, right from your colleagues and bosses, or employees, to your clients. Not getting your workwear right is simply not an option.

There are basic pointers that apply to both sexes that you should keep in mind in order to avoid serious blunders with your workwear. Here is a quick look at a few of these pointers.

1. Stick To The Culture In Your Industry

The level of formality in workwear varies from one industry to the next. While the culture in the tech field may allow for jeans and t-shirt ensemble, the same simply cannot do if you are working in, say, law. Business casual may be acceptable any day in one industry, and in another industry, you may just have to suit up every work day.

2. Understand Company Policy

Different companies within the same industry may have different workwear policies. Make the effort to understand the specifics of what your company's acceptable dress code means. What fits into the description of casual workwear in your company?

If you have only just recently joined a new workplace, do not hesitate to check with HR. You could have only yourself to blame if your poor choice of workwear becomes fodder for office chatter on your very first day.

3. Get The Fit Right

You have established that skirt suits are acceptable clothing items at your job; your next concern should be about getting the cut just right. Get a size too big and that unflattering look will tell others that you do not care too much about your appearance. On the other hand, pick a size too small, and you will end up causing undesirable distractions with your outfit, which could be considered provocative.

4. Watch Your Colour Choices

You can never be too careful with colours. You are better off safe than sorry, and that is why you should make a point to always avoid colours that are too bright. Brightly coloured workwear can be very distracting, and this can affect productivity at the workplace.

Whatever the industry you are working in, you should always strive to ensure that you get your workwear right. With the highlighted tips and more, you can look forward to doing just that.
