Using a Laundromat for the First Time: A Guide

by Genesis Fuller

If you are planning to use a laundromat for the first time, you may be looking for tips and advice. This article will talk you through 4 things you can do to ensure that your trip to wash your clothes is a successful one. Read on to discover everything you need to know.

Take plenty of change with you

While some laundromats have been fitted with technology which allows you to pay using a credit card, this type of set-up is still the exception rather than the rule. If you know you will be visiting a laundromat in the near future, it is always a good idea to start collecting some coins to take with you. If you are someone who doesn't use a lot of cash, it is a good idea to ask friends and family if they have any spare change which you can repay using a bank transfer once you have completed your washing.

Observe laundromat etiquette

Laundromats have unwritten rules and social etiquette all of their own. If you are using a laundromat for the first time, you run the risk of accidentally acting in a way which could upset other people. Here are some of the things you should observe when washing your clothes.

  • If you spill liquid detergent or anything else be sure to clean up after yourself
  • Do not watch other people's laundry as it spins around in the machine as they could be washing personal items such as underwear
  • Always use headphones if you plan to listen to music while you wait for your washing cycle to complete
  • Don't lay claim to a dryer until you have finished using the washing machine
  • If your mobile phone rings, step outside to take the call

Don't overfill the washing machine

While it can be tempting to cram as many items of clothing into a washing machine as possible, in reality, this is a really bad idea. While you may save a small amount of money and time, doing this could prevent the clothes from circulating around the washing machine as it spins. If this occurs, you may find that your clothes are still stained or dirty when the wash cycle has finished as they have not been properly exposed to water and detergent.

These tips will help to make your first trip to a laundromat a successful and happy one which results in a set of nice clean clothes.
